We sell certainty. Not repairs.
Datum is an Auckland building inspection company built on a single idea. Before you commit hundreds of thousands of dollars to a property, you should know exactly what you are buying. We inspect, we document, and we tell you the truth in plain English. We do not do the repairs, so we have no reason to find work that is not there.
Anyone can call themselves a building inspector.
In New Zealand, building inspection is not a regulated trade. There is no licence you are required to hold to walk through a house, write a report, and call yourself an inspector. The quality of what you get depends entirely on who turns up at the door.
Datum was built to be the opposite of a quick look around and a templated report. We go further than the standard, we photograph what we find, and we say what we actually think. When the decision is this big, the inspection should be the most rigorous part of it, not the box you tick on the way to settlement.
Every inspection, by a qualified professional.
Because the industry is unregulated, the credential standing behind the inspection matters more than anything else. Every Datum inspection is carried out by a Licensed Building Practitioner, or by an inspector registered with the New Zealand Institute of Building Inspectors.
A Licensed Building Practitioner is assessed and registered under New Zealand's building licensing scheme, and held to its standards of competence and conduct. The New Zealand Institute of Building Inspectors, the NZIBI, is the industry body for property inspectors, with its own membership requirements and code of ethics. Every report is then prepared to NZS 4306, the New Zealand standard for residential property inspection, and beyond it.

Four things we will not cut.
Rigour
Every inspection is carried out to NZS 4306 and past it, with moisture testing and a drone roof check included as standard, never sprung on you as an extra at the end.
Honesty
Findings are graded, photographed, located, and written in plain English. No hedging, no padding, and nothing claimed that we did not see for ourselves.
Independence
We inspect, we do not repair. That means we have no reason to find work that is not there, and no quote waiting at the end of the report.
Speed
Booked before 10am, your full report is in your inbox by 6pm the same day, in time for finance conditions and auction deadlines.
A datum is the fixed point everything else is measured from.
In surveying, a datum is the established reference point that every other measurement depends on. We chose the name because that is the job. When you are deciding whether to commit, you need one source you can trust, to measure everything else against. That is what the report is, and that is what we set out to be.
Know before you commit.
Tell us the property and your deadline. Book before 10am and the report is with you the same day, anywhere in Auckland.
